Patrick Cavanagh is a special counsel in the insurance team.
Patrick brings a unique perspective to the defence of insurance claims. He understands how to view a claim from both sides and in doing so work towards a speedy and cost-effective resolution to claims.
Patrick has extensive experience in both general liability, casualty and professional indemnity claims and providing advice to insurers with respect general liability and professional indemnity policies.
In the casualty space, Patrick has experience in medical negligence, workers' compensation, public liability and motor vehicle accident claims, and a sound knowledge of the respective pre-litigation regimes and of the Uniform Civil Procedure Rules 1999 (Qld). His experience includes both pursuing and defending injury claims for sub-contractors and third parties occurring on or in connection with construction sites and infrastructure.
Patrick has acted in range of matters relating to complex property damage matters (under both general liability and professional liability policies), caused by allegedly defective design, installation, repair, maintenance and demolition activities. His experience includes providing indemnity advice to Insurers, defending claims and pursuing subrogated recovery actions on behalf of Insurers.
Patrick also acts for life insurers providing advice on policy coverage, and defending claims made under group policies issued to superannuation funds.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws and Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice.
Patrick was admitted to practice as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 2014, the High Court of Australia in 2016 and is a member of the Queensland Law Society, the Australian Insurance Law Association and the Australasian Life Underwriting and Claims Association.
In 2023, Patrick was listed in the Best Lawyers awards in the inaugural Ones to Watch category for Alternative Dispute Resolution, Insurance Law, Litigation, Personal Injury Litigation and Professional Malpractice Litigation.
